Happy 3rd
Anniversary,
Rani

तीन वर्ष भयो, रानी।
तीन वर्ष स्क्रिनमा, चार महिना छेउमा — र मायाले एक दिन पनि छोडेन।

Three years ago you said yes to a boy on a screen. Since then we have survived two countries, a thousand calls, one reunion, and one airport. This is everything I could not fit into a message today.

THREE YEARS, IN NUMBERS

What it actually
added up to

2023 — 2026

स्क्रिनका वर्षहरू

three years of loving you through glass

Before any of these photographs existed, there were three years where the only way I could see your face was to charge my phone and hope the network held.

I want to start here, before the good part, because I do not want to skip it. Three years is a long time to love someone you cannot reach.

We did timezone arithmetic before saying good morning. We ate dinner together on two screens in two countries. I fell asleep on call more times than I can count, and woke up with the phone hot against my face and you still there, breathing, four thousand kilometres away.

I used to press my finger against the screen where your face was. It never once counted as touching you. I did it anyway. Every single time.

Everyone told us quietly that this does not usually work.

सबैले भने — यस्तो टिक्दैन। हामीले सुन्यौं, र पनि छोडेनौं।

the day it changed

जब स्क्रिन सकियो

the day it stopped being a screen

And then one afternoon the picture quality became completely irrelevant, because you were standing in front of me.

Three years of 720p — and then this.
Three years of 720p — and then this.

I had imagined this so many times that I was worried the real thing would be smaller. It was not. You were warm, and tired from the journey, and you smelled like something I had no memory of because a screen cannot carry that.

I took this photo with my arm shaking. Look at the city behind us. All of Kathmandu was down there, and I could not have told you the name of a single street in it.

The first thing I handed you instead of couriered.
The first thing I handed you instead of couriered.

Three years I had sent you things in boxes and then watched you open them on a video call, always a second behind, always slightly out of focus. This one I got to put into your hands and watch your face at full resolution.

I picked two swans because they do not do this alone either.

Your surprise for me, on my birthday.
Your surprise for me, on my birthday.

Every birthday before this one, the person singing to me was a speaker.

where we went to say thank you

For three years we had both been asking for the same thing. When it finally happened, neither of us asked for anything new. We just went to say thank you.

Pashupati. The first time, together.
Pashupati. The first time, together.

Barefoot on cold stone, both of us with tika, you carrying that little red basket like you had done it a hundred times. I had seen this place my whole life. It was completely different with you next to me.

Budhanilkantha, and me grinning like I got away with something.

The first photo I ever took of you with my own hands.
The first photo I ever took of you with my own hands.

I have a folder on my phone of screenshots of you. Three years of your face frozen mid-laugh, mid-sentence, slightly pixelated, sometimes buffering. I kept every one of them.

This is the first picture of you that I did not have to steal from a video call. I was standing there. I chose where to stand. You waited for me to be ready.

Kalinchowk Bhagwati. You were holding my arm.
Kalinchowk Bhagwati. You were holding my arm.

The sign said every wish made here is granted. I stood there with nothing left to ask for.

मागेको इच्छा पूरा हुन्छ रे — मैले माग्नु पर्ने केही बाँकी थिएन।

three thousand eight hundred metres

जाडोमा, सँगै

the cold, together

We went up into a cloud. It was freezing, the fog ate the entire view, and it is still one of the best days of my life.

Inside the cable car, inside a cloud. Blue roofs where the mountains should have been.
Inside the cable car, inside a cloud. Blue roofs where the mountains should have been.
Inside the cable car, inside a cloud. Blue roofs where the mountains should have been.

We went all that way for a view and the mountain gave us fog. I remember being annoyed for about four minutes. Then you said something and I forgot to care.

It was cold enough that neither of us let go the whole way up. I was not complaining.

Your arms around me. In person. Finally.
Your arms around me. In person. Finally.

For three years I used to describe this to myself before falling asleep. The weight of it, where your head would be, how long it would last.

I had every detail wrong. It was better than the version I invented, and I had given that version three years of practice.

"I look more handsome than you, right?" You let me have that one. 😅

the nothing days

साधारण दिनहरू

the ordinary days, which turned out to be the best ones

Nobody warns you about this part. It is not the temples or the mountains I replay at two in the morning. It is the days where we did nothing at all.

Two lassis, one railing, the whole valley.
Two lassis, one railing, the whole valley.

We were coming back from Doleshwor and we were so tired we could barely lift the glasses. We did cheers anyway. You complained that your arms hurt. We did it again.

This is a photograph of two drinks on a railing and it is one of my favourite things I own.

Bored in a hospital corridor, and still glad to be there.
Bored in a hospital corridor, and still glad to be there.

We were bored. Actually bored, in a corridor, with nothing to do but put your watch on my wrist and see what it said.

Here is the thing I did not expect. Three years I had waited for you alone. That afternoon I was waiting for something else entirely, and it was still the best part of the week, because I was waiting next to you instead of for you.

Me lecturing you about history by a fountain. Heaven's Garden, for the second time. 😅

Me lecturing you about history by a fountain. Heaven's Garden, for the second time. 😅

You did not ask to learn any history. I told you all of it anyway, by a fountain, fully committed, for much longer than was reasonable. You listened to the whole thing.

And we went back to Heaven's Garden because once was not enough. Then going back became the habit. That is how you know a place has become ours.

"Picture clicked by you in the person — not bad." Not bad at all, Rani.

I keep this one because of who was behind the camera, not who was in front of it.

the night you flew back

Look at this one again — but not at the suitcases.
Look at this one again — but not at the suitcases.

Look at how many people came. Your family, all of them, standing around a trolley at eleven at night because you were leaving. Tika on every single forehead, including mine.

A tika before a journey is not a goodbye. It is a blessing to come back. Somebody pressed one onto your forehead that night and quietly told the universe to return you. I was standing right there when they did it.

And here is the thing I keep coming back to. For three years our goodbyes had no witnesses. A call would end, the screen would go black, and I would sit in a dark room on my own like it had not just happened. Nobody saw it. Nobody marked it.

This goodbye had your mother in it. It had the kids. It had luggage and tika and a camera and me. It was loud and crowded and real, and I got to hold you before you went instead of watching a connection drop.

That is not a downgrade, Rani. That is the upgrade. We went from a call ending to a whole family standing in an airport. Same distance on paper. Completely different thing underneath.

You left. You were not lost. And the road back is shorter than it has ever been.

तिमी गएकी हौ — गुमेकी होइनौ। फर्किने बाटो अहिले पहिलेभन्दा छोटो छ।

AND SO, TODAY

Same moment.
Different numbers.

A letter for year three

D❤R

press & hold the seal

तेस्रो वर्षको शुभकामना, मेरी रानी ❤

I am late today. You already know that, because you know me. I spent the whole day trying to write something big enough and everything I typed looked small next to what I meant, so I deleted it and built this instead. Three years in, and I still cannot say it properly in one message. That is not a flaw in me. That is the size of it.

Three years ago we started something that everyone quietly thought would not survive. Two countries. A phone that froze at the best parts. Festivals spent alone, birthdays spent on speaker, a hundred nights where the only thing I could give you was staying on the line until you fell asleep. I used to press my finger on the screen where your face was. It never counted as touching you. I did it anyway, every time.

And then this year it stopped being theoretical. I met you at last, and you were not a notification, you were a whole person who was warm and tired and taller than I had adjusted for. We went to Pashupati barefoot. We froze at Kalinchowk. We found a waterfall that was not on any plan. You held my arm in front of Bhagwati and I stood there with nothing left to ask for.

जुन दिन तिम्रो हात पहिलो पटक समातेँ, त्यही दिन तीन वर्षको पर्खाइको हिसाब पूरा भयो।

But the part I did not expect is what I miss most. Not the temples. Not the mountains. I miss the hospital corridor where we were bored. I miss you letting me lecture you about history by a fountain. I miss two lassis on a railing when we were too tired to lift them. Nobody tells you that the ordinary days are the ones that go into your bones. I have four months of ordinary days now, and I will be living off them for a while.

Then came the airport, and you went back, and I am not going to pretend that was easy. But here is what I have learned in three years that I did not know at the start: we are not lucky, we are proven. Anybody can love someone who is in the room. We did it across a border, for three years, without ever being given a date. Distance came back this month and found nothing to break, because we already broke it once and it did not work.

So this is my third anniversary message, and it is very simple. I am not waiting for you the way I waited the first time, anxious and unsure. I am waiting the way you wait for something that is already yours. The arrivals gate is a matter of when, not whether. I have done the hard version of this. I would do it twice more.

तिमी नै मेरो घर हौ, रानी — जुन देशमा भए पनि।

Thank you for three years. Thank you for the four months. Thank you for every single time you could have let go and did not. Happy anniversary, my Rani. I am late, and I am yours, and one of those two things is never going to change.

Still yours, three years in —
